James White

James White is a St. Augustine-born artist whose deep connection to Florida’s natural beauty and rich artistic heritage is reflected in every brushstroke. Born in 1959, James began painting at a young age, guided and encouraged by a creative family—especially his uncle, a professional illustrator who worked on iconic projects for the U.S. Forest Service, MGM Studios, and Disney.

By age 11, James was already painting in oils. As a teenager, he was mentored by renowned local artists including Emmett Fritz, Jean Wagner Troemel, Joe Taylor, and Courtney Hunt, who generously shared their time and materials. Though never formally trained, James credits these artists for shaping his foundation and inspiring a lifelong commitment to painting.

Rooted in his passion for the outdoors, James draws inspiration from Florida’s rivers, wildlife, and wilderness. For him, painting is both meditation and prayer—a spiritual practice of gratitude and expression. In return for the support he once received, he now gives back by teaching and offering free workshops to his community
